We didn’t have the money for a gut renovation, let alone a contractor, but we also knew the kitchen needed a complete overhaul. Another hurdle: we needed a working kitchen throughout our project. So, we decided to work in sections, which made it easier to pay for items as we went. There were two things that we spent the bulk of our budget on: new countertops and refinishing our solid wood cabinets.
A kitchen, home to a family with two young, rambunctious boys, was once crammed, unorganized, and insular, with restricted counter space and no extra room for hanging about. Although the dining area was connected to an outdoor patio, it lacked integration to the outdoors. Squeeze a little extra storage out of your kitchen by adding height with shelving units. Installing open shelving instead of cabinets is not only an easy and efficient way to hold dishware, but also a trendy option for an open-concept kitchen design.
Any cabinets you plan to install can also be adjusted as per the length, especially the L shaped kitchen cabinets that need to be installed in the corner of the layout. The cabinets can be traditional or modern in design; neither detracts from the aesthetic of the kitchen. This kitchen-diner extension to a home created from three listed cottages, is accessed via the living room. A vaulted ceiling in the light-filled kitchen and dining areas creates a sense of space, while the living room ceiling is much lower and features exposed beams for a cosier cottage feel.
