A furniturelike Lacanche range is topped off with a custom plaster range hood. By painting the hood the same color as the walls, the hood could easily fade into the background. It's the one-of-a-kind shape that makes it a definite focal point in the room. Window treatments, I’ve noticed, are often left out in kitchen renovations, even when other elements are carefully chosen for a period-inspired look. Curtains or shades give a more finished appearance, in addition to being practical for regulating light and privacy
If you have a huge family, and you indulge in commercial-scale cooking that requires a powerful exhaust fan, you’ll need to install a powered makeup air unit like those manufactured by Electro Industries of Monticello, Minnesota or Fantech. These units move a lot of air; in winter, the incoming air is cold, but it can be heated with 10,000-watt electric resistance elements if you want. Be prepared to suffer a huge energy penalty. The model EM-WH1025K from Electro Industries will supply 632 cfm at a 50 F° temperature rise. If you want a 1,200-cfm range hood, you’ll need two of these makeup air units; they cost about $1,800 each.
Ubiquitous roller shades can be rolled up, pulled down, or left in-between, providing the best light control and the most privacy. The old-fashioned spring-loaded ones eliminate cords. You don’t have to settle for white vinyl, or even plain fabric. Diane Hayes of Alameda Shade Shop suggests adding a special fringe or a scallop treatment at the bottom, or a stenciled decoration in paint
