Broan recommends installing an outdoor air duct connected to a grille mounted on the kitchen wall or connected directly to the return plenum of your furnace; the motorized damper is installed in the duct. One 8-inch-diameter duct works for a range hood rated up to 1,000 cfm. If your range hood is bigger than that, you’ll need two ducts.
If your range hood cover itself is simply boring, make a statement with a stylish cover. If you’re a novice woodworker, but you want to spruce up your range hood, add corbels. This old French word simply means a fixture coming out from a wall to support a structure above it. In this instance, the corbels function strictly as a decorative accent piece since your hood cover is already mounted in place. You can buy pre-made corbels or you can handcraft and install your own design and mount them under your range hood cover.
ASHRAE’s residential ventilation standard, ASHRAE 62.2, limits exhaust fans to a maximum of 15 cfm per 100 square feet of occupiable space, unless a backdrafting test is performed. According to this standard, the smallest home in which a 1,200-cfm range hood could be installed without verifying makeup air needs would be one measuring 8,000 square feet — a very large McMansion indeed.
