When we think of all the places we want to show our personality in the kitchen, the sink certainly isn’t one of them. Yet, in the same way, a bold range, retro refrigerator, or graphic backsplash brings new meaning (and big style) to the heart of the home, a design-forward sink can also elevate the room.
A room with a view can be an appealing proposition, particularly if your kitchen sink is fixed in an island. This design allows you to face out into a room of family and friends instead of doing dishes with your back turned to them. This socially minded setup lends itself well to entertaining and continuing conversation while performing prep work or cleanup chores.
Laura was determined to find the perfect circa-1950 sink at salvage, so she started looking for one online. When purchasing salvage items, it helps to know exactly what you want; Laura did. "I wanted a large double drainboard sink with one big basin," she says, "and it had to be in good condition." It also needed to be deep, so water wouldn't readily splash out—a lesson the Lazets learned the hard way after installing an antique, wall-mounted sink in their laundry room that was saved from a farmhouse being demolished across the road.
