The north wall of the kitchen houses a Sub-Zero fridge behind a custom panel door and two wall ovens. The stove is located in the island; under-counter island drawers hold pots and pans. The cabinets are traditionally inspired, with Vitzthum’s signature substantial bracket detailing. The ceiling is also painted a creamy white with a touch of pink. “Pink helps create peace and harmony within the space,” notes Vitzthum. The walls throughout the kitchen, pantry, and family room are also painted white, completing the ethereal look
Using a number of images of Bulthaup kitchens with lighting schemes and fittings designed by John Cullen Lighting, Thomas showed how layered lighting creates the most interesting effects from adding an LED strip under an island to create a floating effect or adding floor washers into a kick plinth to show off the floor finish. Thomas discussed how the introduction of LEDs has opened up a fresh new world of lighting possibilities but it was key to select the good quality LEDs with good colour consistency, colour rendition and colour temperature.
Keep in mind, that with dimmers installed for a layered lighting scheme, it can be very easy for other occupants of your home, as well as guests, to alter your perfectly balanced settings, throwing off the carefully curated look and feel of your kitchen. To avoid this – or at least easily recover from it – consider installing a smart lighting system with “scenes” that you can program, allowing you to reset the kitchen’s light layers to your preferences at the push of a button.
