Linoleum is still made using the original formula, which includes cork and linseed oil. Cork, grown on the tree of the same name, is almost wholly natural. Vinyl composition tile (VCT) is typically made of polyvinyl chloride chips, in a blend that usually includes a hefty percentage (20 to 25) of recycled or natural materials like limestone.
Onyx and Travertine are very premium and expensive stones. They are decorative in purpose and prone to cracking. Resins are used to make the tile strong and durable. They find their applications in bars, highlighter walls, bathroom walls and the interiors of high end residences etc. Onyx can be lit from behind to give a very calm and soothing effect.
Laminate flooring is incredibly durable, with high stain and fade resistance. These hard surface floors are easy to clean and maintain, as the wear and moisture-resistant surface makes spills and other messes no bother to clean up. Wide planks, bold colors and textures, and exotic species are all hot trends at the moment. And, for the environmentally-conscious consumer, laminate wood flooring is always an environmentally-friendly product for your home.
Wood floors are an old-house staple—but in the harsh environment of the kitchen, wood will splinter, flake, and warp when exposed repeatedly to water. That's why early Americans quickly learned to seal wood floors with whatever was available, from homemade paint to wax and tung oil. Similarly, Victorian homeowners jumped at the chance to install water-resistant materials like linoleum and mosaic tile as soon as they became widely available in the last quarter of the 19th century.
Instead of rebuilding the entire kitchen look for refurbishing. If your kitchen walls or flooring has become dull, choose some interesting and low budget options. You can choose stone cladding which comes with interesting options like red stone, granite stone, limestone cladding, marble or natural stone cladding.
Since the tiles will be turned on the diagonal, you want large or complete tiles to edge the most visible entrance into the kitchen. Then make an accurate template of the pattern on graph paper, taking care to include any odd bump–outs or –ins. Allow about 15 percent overage for a diagonal pattern.
Using your chalk lines for reference, line up the first or starter tile. Then lay down just enough adhesive to accommodate four tiles. If you have chosen variegated tiles in contrasting colors, lay them so that the pattern in the lighter tiles are at right angles to the pattern in the darker tiles. This is called quarter-turning.
