If your home has more than two storeys as is common where a loft has been converted, then you need to be sure that your open plan space will meet the Building Regulations with regards to fire and escape. This is usually an issue if the open plan area is your main means of escape. In these cases, you may need fire doors between the kitchen and first floor, as well as a fire protected escape route from the first floor.
Onyx and Travertine are very premium and expensive stones. They are decorative in purpose and prone to cracking. Resins are used to make the tile strong and durable. They find their applications in bars, highlighter walls, bathroom walls and the interiors of high end residences etc. Onyx can be lit from behind to give a very calm and soothing effect.
Linoleum, cork, and vinyl composition tile (VCT) are historically correct for kitchens in homes built from the late 19th century to the 1950s. Durable and easy on the feet, resilient floors can last for decades. Since the pattern goes all the way through the material, they also help conceal dirt and damage. Available as tile or sheet goods, all three also offer unlimited scope for patterns, from simple checkerboards to intricate inlays.
